The Lab Letter

The Lab Letter is a newsletter for Mary Washington students who want to grow—intellectually, professionally, and personally—while doing work that matters.

But let’s be a bit more direct…

Your life has intersected with the work of the Social Good Lab for one reason: to help you cross a threshold. Unlike much of today’s higher education system, the Lab is not here to extend adolescence. It exists to help transform students into professionals (ht: Stephen Pressfield).

And let’s be absolutely clear about what professional means here.

A professional shows up, ships work, accepts feedback, and earns trust.

A professional is not defined by earning an “A” in a class. A professional does not do their work well because of extrinsic rewards like grades or money.

Professionals are driven by pride—by honor—and by the esteem they earn from other professionals. And, let’s be absolutely clear, there is no higher recognition than when another professional witnesses your work and gives you the quiet head nod that says, I see you.

Professionals recognize other professionals. The field, era, or geography doesn’t matter. You’re either a professional or you’re not. If you’re not, you’re an amateur. That’s it. That’s the distinction.

And right now, you’re a student. So, you’re an amateur.

That may sound harsh, but no one starts out as a professional. Becoming a professional is a process—one the Social Good Lab exists to support.

So this is the Lab’s invitation: to join a community of peers who have decided against drifting, coasting, or settling for mediocrity—and who are willing to do the work required to become professionals.
